Marguerite Ann Johnson "Maya Angelou" (1928- Present)
April 4, 1928- Marguerite Ann Johnson is born in Saint Louis, Missouri .
1937- Marguerite suffers abuse and is traumitized; she is lost with her words and choses to speak no longer.
1941- Along with her brother, Maguerite moves to California to study dance and drama. She also finds herself speaking again.
1952- Began working as a nightclub singer taking on her stage name, Maya Angelou.
1958- Maya moves to New York and begins writing poetry.
1959- Started getting involved with Civil Rights Activists.
1968- Malcolm X is assassinated and Maya began working on her Autobiographical book "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings".
1977- Receives the Golden Eagle Award, Afro-American in the Arts.
1978- Published her narrative poem "Still I Rise".
1996- Martin Luther King, Jr. Legacy Association National Award.
